The Expedition
This isn’t a hike. It’s a stakeout.
A slow, patient watch at the edge of the wild. You don’t chase animals. You let them come to you.
In the late afternoon we leave Sofia and drive towards the Pirin Mountains, near the town of Simitli. By early evening we settle into a specially positioned hide - a discreet, comfortable shelter designed to keep us out of sight while offering a clear view of a forest clearing, a water source, or a natural game trail.
Then we wait. And we watch.
As the sun drops behind the mountains, the forest wakes up. Deer step out of the tree line. Wild boar move in small groups. And if we are lucky - very lucky - a brown bear may appear at the edge of the clearing, its massive shape moving silently through the dusk.
No loud voices. No sudden movements. Just the quiet presence of animals going about their lives, unaware that we are there.
Your Guide:
A local wildlife expert who knows this forest intimately – where animals drink, where they feed, which trails they use at different times of the year. He doesn't guess. He reads the signs.
He’ll show you how to stay silent, how to scan the tree line, how to interpret behaviour at a distance. He’ll share stories from years of observation: the bear that appeared out of nowhere, the wolf that crossed the clearing at twilight.
Your Day:
🌌 15:00 - Depart from Sofia
🚐 16:30 - Arrival near Simitli. Briefing on hide etiquette: silence, movement, light discipline.
🔭 17:00 - Settle into the hide. Sunset begins. Animals become active.
🌙 19:00-21:00 - Peak observation window. The golden hour turns to dusk. This is when large mammals are most likely to appear.
🚗 21:00 - Return transfer. Arrival in Sofia around 22:30.
🐻 What you might see?
✔ Brown bear - the star of the evening, though never guaranteed. Every sighting is a gift.
✔ Wild boar - often in small family groups.
✔ Wolf - not always making an appearance, but spectacular to see the "big bad wolf".
✔ Red deer, fallow deer, roe deer - cautious, graceful.
✔ Golden jackal - sometimes heard before seen.
✔ Fox, badger - quieter, shyer neighbours.
Even without a bear, the forest at dusk is never empty. Birds call. Shadows move. The quiet itself becomes part of the experience.
🌲 Is This for You?
✔ You don’t need to see a bear to feel the magic of the forest at dusk
✔ You have patience. You can sit still, watch, and wait
✔ You want to witness wild animals behaving naturally – not performing
✔ You understand that wildlife observation requires silence, respect, and a bit of luck
✔ You’re happy to put the phone away and simply be present
This is not a safari. There are no guarantees. But when the forest goes quiet and a dark shape emerges from the tree line, you’ll understand why people come back to hides like this again and again.

🎒 What to bring

- Headlamp (for the short walk from the vehicle to the hide)

Important notes!
- No guarantee of sightings. Wildlife observation is not a zoo. We maximise our chances by choosing the right time and place, but animals are free to be elsewhere.
- Silence is essential. Loud voices, sudden movements, and phone screens will scare animals away before they ever appear.
- Children under 12 and pets are not recommended. Long periods of sitting still in silence can be difficult for young children and/or pets.
- The hide is basic but comfortable - designed for observation, not for luxury.
